Cultivation of Bodhicitta
by Lama Jigmé Namgyal
The principal focus of the Mahāyāna teachings is the cultivation of bodhicitta – a state of mind dedicated to the attainment of enlightenment in order to benefit all sentient beings. Through compassion and the wish to overcome our own afflicted emotions, we can increase our own sense of peace and happiness. This enables us to contribute to the peace and happiness of others, as well. This attitude of ‘relative bodhicitta’ helps us to overcome whichever obstacles arise, until we may achieve ‘ultimate bodhicitta’, which is the direct realization of the true nature of phenomena through the wisdom of emptiness.
