Phuntsok Namgyal Ling

Meaning “the sacred place of abundance”, Phuntsok Namgyal Ling aspires to be a center dedicated to mindful living. Safeguarding the values of traditional Tibetan living – harmony between land, animal and humanity – and dedicated to the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism, Phuntsok Namgyal Ling will be a place welcoming all individuals looking to make a deeper connection with heaven and earth. Please join us in this vision.

The Phuntsok Namgyal Ling Foundation is currently raising funds to purchase a piece of land in Europe. Ideally, this will be situated in a remote, natural location, with fertile soil to grow crops and keep animals. Whether near the coast or in the mountains, this place will provide a space not only for organic farming, but also a residential meditation retreat centre for monastics and lay practitioners alike.

The Moment of Death: Cause of Fear or Opportunity?

The Centre Culturel Tibétain is happy to announce that Lama Jigme Namgyal will give a public lecture on the subject “The Moment of Death: Cause of Fear or Opportunity?”. The lecture will be translated into English by Dr. Dylan Esler.

The Moment of Death: Cause of Fear or Opportunity?

Whether we like it or not, death concerns each and everyone of us. It is not an if but rather a when and a how. According to the Buddha’s teachings, when we die our body returns to dust, yet our consciousness continues. Consciousness is the basic sense of being ‘me’, which in Buddhism is understood as a continuous process of self-grasping. It is this sense of self that is the cause of experiencing both happiness and suffering – in this life, at death, and afterwards. The implication is that, unlike what is taught in other religions, our fate at death is not dependent on divine intervention, but is rather the result of the actions and thoughts that constitute the habits of our consciousness.

As human beings, we have a unique opportunity to prepare for the moment of death. It is like entering a battlefield or other challenging situation: if we are well prepared, there is less cause for concern. Preparing for death means understanding the ways our minds are conditioned by habit. It also means that we can learn to change our habits and to decondition our mind. Through the practice of meditation, we can discover the lasting freedom of inner peace. Far from being a cause of fear, death becomes an opportunity, then, to uncover the true nature of mind, which is beyond habitual conditioning.

Saga Dawa – May 31 to June 29

Personal message from Lama Jigmé

Tashi delek!
I wish you all a happy Saga Dawa and I really wish that you all will apply the ten virtuous actions (I hope you remember what they are!) and the ethics that we have been studying for many years in the Wednesday class as much as you can in daily life, and pray for all who are suffering and lost their lives and loved ones during these difficult times. It is a great opportunity to come to the ceremony on August 19-21 2022, because we will be dedicating the merit accumulated during Saga Dawa together, to benefit all sentient beings.

I wish you all the best this month. This means nonviolence, mental peace and to live a life more useful and meaningful.

Tashi delek!
Lama Jigmé Namgyal

Saga Dawa

Saga Dawa, or the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, starts May 31 and ends on June 29 in 2022. The main days of celebration in 2022 are June 29, the day that the Buddha was born and June 14, when Buddha reached enlightenment and passed away (parinirvana).

Saga Dawa is the most sacred month of the year in Tibetan Buddhism, commemorating the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana (death) of the Buddha and it is believed that all positive and negative actions are multiplied by 100 million as a result.

Therefore Saga Dawa is called the ‘month of merits’ for Tibetan Buddhists. Dawa means ‘month’ and Saga or Saka is the name of a star prominent in the sky during the fourth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar.

Traditionally, the holy day of Saga Dawa is observed through practice, generosity, and the performance of meritorious deeds. So this month is especially dedicated to ‘making merit’. Merit is understood in many ways in Buddhism. We can think of it as the fruits of karma, especially when this brings us closer to enlightenment. The three grounds of meritorious actions are generosity, morality, and meditation, although there are many ways to make merit.

Sojin, the practice of life release, is commonly performed by purchasing animals that are destined to be killed (like worms, crickets or fish), and releasing them into their natural habitat with prayers and positive aspirations. The act of giving this way is believed to extend the practitioner’s lifespan and create positive circumstances.

The lighting of butter lamps is a common devotional practice. The lights are said to banish spiritual darkness as well as visual darkness. Donating lamp oil is another way to make merit, or giving to the poor. Another way to make merit is by not eating meat and not consuming alcohol.

Happy Holidays to you all!

A message from Lama Jigmé Namgyal

I wish you all happy holidays, merry Christmas and a happy New Year! And happy means  having a calm and peaceful mind. It also means having a happy family. Maybe you really know what a happy mind is. I hope you do. My wish is that you will always be well, whatever you do, say or think.

Be in harmony with yourself and others. And take care of your environment, for example buy less plastic. Have respect for our water, air and Mother Earth. Have respect for others, not only for humans but also for animals. In Buddhism it is said that if you respect others, you respect yourself. If you harm others, you harm yourself. Please be mindful, so it will really be a happy new year for all.

If you have not been able to join one of the classes this year, then maybe you can join as of next year. In January will start with a new subject on Monday, and with a new chapter on the Wednesday. No need to hesitate, you are very welcome to join.

Then, from the deepest of my heart I wish you, your family and friends, love, unconditional love and happiness, so that you will understand each other and become happy in a peaceful way.

Hope to see you soon again!

Tashi delek!

Online Public Lecture – Finding stability in times of change – 9 May

On Saturday May 9th, Lama Jigmé will give an online public lecture: “Finding stability in times of change” (10am CEST).

If you want to join the lecture please register by sending an email to info@phuntsoknamgyalling.org

If we are attentive to our own experience, we will see that everything is constantly changing: this holds true not only for the outer world, including the economic and political realities that shape society but also for our friends and family, and also for our emotions. Although we may not always realize this, sometimes change can be for the best. If we try to artificially stop change, we cause more suffering, because we are resisting the very nature of reality. The point is to learn to influence the causes and conditions that bring about both suffering and happiness, and to find inner stability in the midst of change.

This session is open to all, irrespective of religion, background or nationality.

Location: Online
When: Saturday May 9th 2020
Time: 10:00 – 12:00 CEST
Register: info@phuntsoknamgyalling.org (we will send you a link upon payment of the fee)
Price: 10,- (or more if you wish). It will be a contribution to Lama’s project to buy a piece of land where practitioners can do serious retreats and studies.
